Garage Door Cable Repair

Have your garage door cables broken or snapped?  Garage door cable repair is needed when this happens.  If it makes you feel any better, many people experience the breaking of safety cables in their garage door system.  What causes these cables to break?

The main reason garage door repair is needed on cables is because of how they wear when the springs take the load.  What we mean by this is that many times cables stretch or have too much slack.  This causes the cables to be wound up in the track and even run over by the garage door track wheels.  This weakens and damages the cable until it eventually snaps or breaks.  What most people don’t realize is that garage door cables are under severe amounts of tension and stress.  The cable help the springs to wind and unwind.  When cables are damaged or not functioning properly, it causes the springs to put tension on themselves in places they are not designed to have tension.  Bad cable = broken torsion and extension springs.

Broken springs are extremly dangerous.  When a spring breaks, it has the force and power to break someone’s neck with ease if standing too close when this happens.  Changing out garage door cables is actually very easy.  There are several places to buy garage door cable.  Some of the cheapest places to purchase cable is on the internet or wharehouse stores like Home Depot or Lowes.  You can never go wrong going to a garage door repair service shop and order your cables there.

Simply unloop the cable from the harness and be very careful when removing the cable around the springs.  Make sure the garage door is CLOSED when you attempt to remove the cables.  This puts the springs in its least harmful amount of tension state.  Simple replace the steel cables and re-open the garage door.  Stand back when you do this in case the springs are not supported well enough by the cable replacement.
