If the garage door has not been installed properly you will know right away.  If the door tends to jump rather glide in a fluid motion it could mean the door is pushing at the wrong angle.  If you pull the red emergency cord and release the door manually you can check to see if the door is in correct balance.  If a spring is weak it could make the opener do too much work and carry most of the weight of the door.
