As many of you know, President Obama has recently called for an extension on the TARP funds created to help stimulate the economy. As part of this extension, the President is actually offering tax cuts and giving incentives to winterize your home as well as offering small businesses to hire more people. Did you know that replacing your garage door is included within the realm of winterizing and weatherizing your home? This article will go over the key elements that help garage door replacement fit into this category of weatherizing your home.

The first thing to consider is that every garage door has weather stips on the bottoms of the door, but does your garage door have weatherizing strips on the side? In recent years, garage doors have been built to seal air in the garage better as well as newer doors are built with better insulation material. These improvements alone help with saving you money on heating bills.

The next factor that fits in with weatherizing and making your home more energy efficient is that actual garage door opener. The new garage door openers are very energy friendly and use little electricity to open the large garage doors of today. These advancements are wonderful as the new garage door openers use less electricity which is better on the environment. Of course if you use less electricity you will also be saving yourself alot of money on your electric bill each month.

Because garage doors are a part of making your home more energy efficient, the government is giving out free money to help you make the changes. For example, with heating and air the government is offering a $1,500 dollar tax credit for purchasing a new energy efficient furnace or air conditioner. So will be the case with garage doors. The government has not yet announced how much money they will give to consumers who replace or upgrade their garage door components to make their home more energy efficient. Experts are saying we should get more information on this as soon as the year turns over, but don’t be surprised if the governement dishes out quite a bit of money to help people make their garage door systems more energy efficient.

If you are looking to replace your garage door, talk to your local garage door repair service and ask them if they have any tax incentives tied to the TARP funds to help you make your garage door opening system more efficient and cost effective.
